Shabab Hama, 2024

Relief on Tarlatan, 30x55”

A piece synthesizing my mother’s memories of the waterwheels, or nawaiir, in the Syrian city of Hama, and the miracle of their existence in the past century of violence. Printed upon tarlatan to achieve simultaneous transparency and opaqueness, the scene is both present and absent, highlighting the miraculous ephemerality of these millenia-old waterwheels, and also that my view of the nawaiir is hazy, as it is really the view of another.
